Maria Walton at the Pengelly Double Dip

Next Saturday, June 9, will be the Pengelly Double Dip run in Missoula, Montana, an event that Micah loved. This year, the organizers are dedicating the run to him, and invited Maria Walton to run it, alongside 200 other runners who will tackle the strenuous 13.1-mile course, and give a talk about recent events and the future of the Copper Canyons Ultra Marathon. Interested runners can sign up here.

Born To Run Ultra Marathons

Last Saturday, Maria Walton, race director Luis Escobar, many Mas Locos and hundreds of free runners gathered for the Born To Run Ultra Marathons, held this year in honor of Caballo Blanco, who remained listed as a registered runner for the 100km.

Everyone gathered at the East Creek Ranch in Los Olivos, California, for a celebration of all things dear to Micah: friendship, love, freedom, sharing and running free. The event started with a Chabochi (foreigner) version of the Rarajipare, the Tarahumara traditional ball race, followed by an evening of BBQ, of reunited friends, even some tattooing and a lot of fireside stories. Then, at 6:00 am sharp on Saturday, all the runners started together, with some running 10 miles, 50K, 50 miles, 100K or 100 miles. The celebration lasted until noon the next day. As always, peace was created and all came back with fond memories.

We will post images and videos of the event in the days to come.

A day of remembrance, of friendship and of running free

New York Memorial Run for Caballo Blanco

[caption id="attachment_340" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Caballo Blanco Memorial Run, NY"][/caption]

New York State runners were eagerly awaiting Saturday, April 21, to meet Caballo Blanco, run with him and hear his presentation on the Raramuri and the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon. After they heard of his disappearance, organizers Christy Cuomo and Dean Leggiero from Westchester Road Runner decided to transform the event into a memorial for their lost friend.

So last Saturday became a day of remembrance, friendship and free running. Under a beautiful sun, around 20 runners met at the Phelps Memorial Auditorium and went for a run on the surrounding trails, then gathered for a projection of a previous talk given in 2010 by Micah and the short movies by Flint and Olaf, filmed in the canyons only 8 weeks ago.

Special thanks to Saucony, who was present with shoe trials for the runners.

In Memory of Caballo Blanco

Run close to the mountains Stay a heartbeat away Cover the low moon with your wings And walk tomorrow’s miles today

Watch the sun race the sky And know you’ll pass her once again When time frees your soul and you find the fabled trail that doesn’t end

Dust ascends on the horizon A deep, rumbling thunder without rain The sound of rampant hearts, a legion Earthly, feral and unconstrained

The search will end as it began A trail of footprints, a bird and a feather When a white horse dies on a sandy road All wild hearts mourn together
